Join our appeal to support vulnerable older people living in isolation and poverty
02/12/2011
Age Concern Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan is urging members of the public to help raise much needed funds towards supporting older people in crisis. The "Crisis Concern" appeal launches today, Monday the 5th December 2011, and assists people who are vulnerable, isolated and in poverty who find themselves in need of support in these tough economic times.
Age Concern already spends £5,000 a year to benefit around 40 individual older people. We need to double the money available this year.
The £10,000 we are asking people to help us raise will be spent through payments made to the supplier of goods or services. Payments are not made to individual applicants.
Grants are typically awarded at around £150 to £200 and your donation will help older people in crisis. It will help replace or repair essentials such as: furniture, a fridge, washing machine, cooker, some other electrical goods, beds, bedding and clothing
Commenting on the importance of the appeal, Jeff Hawkins, Age Concern Cardiff and the Vale CEO said:
“Unfortunately, we still live in a social-economic environment that still discriminates against vulnerable older people. Depicting elderly people as victims, living in cold homes, unkempt, and poor, may well attract financial support and sympathy but this approach is demeaning and is not the dignified picture many older people would recognise of themselves. Through our Crisis Concern Appeal we aim to seek resources for older people that protect and promote their independence and provide the dignity they are worthy of”.
With help from the public, Age Concern Cardiff and the Vale can help many more people facing difficult times. We urge members of the public, community groups and organisations to act now and show your concern in their time of need.
Please make much needed donations and arrange fundraising events for your friends, colleagues and neighbours to take part in. By doing so you will be contributing much needed funds to our Crisis Concern Appeal and helping so many more older people enjoy the comfort and wellbeing they rightfully deserve.
