It is beautifully presented and illustrated, fascinating in its detail and art work, an ideal record of a great movie, appealing to cinemagoers, artists and cinema historians alike.
SPIELBERG by Richard Schickel (Thames and Hudson £24.95). This retrospective, a companion to his films, handsomely illustrated with a text based on past-interviews, would have been even better for more information about the director’s relationship with his actors, cameramen and designers plus quotes from the critics of the day.
THE BIG SCREEN by David Thomson (Allen Lane £25). The sub-title is The Story of the Movies and What They Did to Us. Thomson is for many cinemagoers their favourite film critic and he is always a good read.
MOVIEBOX by Paolo Mereghetti (Thames and Hudson £19.95) is a collection of more than 350 iconic photographs. If you like the movies, this is a fun book. Turn the pages, either alone, or with family and friends, and see how many faces you (or they) will be able to recognize and name without reading the captions.

Jeremy Hunt hands responsibility for out-of-hours care back to GPs
The GP contract is set to be rewritten as part of reforms to out-of-hours care which will see general practice handed back responsibility for the care of patients around the clock.
Speaking at a King’s Fund conference yesterday, Jeremy Hunt said that GPs will not ‘personally’ have to be on call at all times but that they should have ‘sign-off’ to say they are happy with their patients’ care out of hours.

Statins in new diabetes link
Certain statins may put older people at risk of developing diabetes, according to the findings of a new study.
Researchers in Canada looked at the medical records of more than 470,000 people aged 66 or over with no history of diabetes who were newly treated with a statin. They found compared with pravastatin, treatment with higher potency statins, especially atorvastatin and simvastatin, might be associated with an increased risk of diabetes.
