“With nights getting longer and forecasts for a bitter winter, it is vital that motorists ensure that they can rely on their vehicles before venturing out on the roads, and think carefully about whether their journey is entirely necessary.
“Planning ahead and taking the time to give your car a winter service will help you to stay safe. It is also essential that you have appropriate insurance and breakdown cover in place should you encounter any motoring mishaps.”
Top tips for a safer drive:
· If conditions are poor and causing concern, think carefully as to whether your journey is essential or whether public transport may be a safer option
· Get your battery checked before you set out on a long journey. A reputable garage can advise you on how to do this or could check it for you on site
· Check tyre tread and pressure - the legal standard is 1.6mm. However, better tread will result in better grip which will be beneficial in icy, snowy or wet conditions
· Clean your lights and check they are working properly - grime and dirt can prevent lights from giving full glow
· Ensure that you have a scraper and de-icer in the car at all times
· Keep de-icer in the house – this will help you get into your car if the locks have frozen
· Never put boiling water on the windscreen – the dramatic difference in temperatures will cause the glass to crack
· Allow longer journey times in case road conditions are bad
· Always carry a warm coat, blankets and gloves in the boot of your car
· If you have a mobile telephone make sure it is fully charged before beginning any journey
· Make sure your oil, water and antifreeze levels are topped checked by a garage

Woodland Court staff face secure future thanks to Brunelcare
Residents and staff at a retirement village in Downend have finally reached the end of two years of uncertainty, following the acquisition of Woodland Court by Brunelcare.
Previous owners of the 57 apartment village, Care Village Group, went into administration in June 2011, leaving the residents and staff with an uncertain future.
The top priority for the Bristol based charity has been to retain all 27 members of staff to ensure that the support services are maintained, whilst minimising any disruption to the residents.

Stamping their feet
THOUSANDS OF Post Office staff have taken part in strikes across the country following a dispute about closures, jobs and pay.
A staggering 88 per cent of Communication Workers Union members voted in favour of strike action, following a refusal from the Post Office to negotiate terms.
The 4,000 workers, from 373 offices, took part in the strikes in opposition to plans to close 76 offices.
They hope to protect jobs and services and secure a fair pay rise for Post Office staff - who have not had a wage increase since April 2011.

Loneliness is a ‘ticking time bomb’
One in three people over the age of 50 struggles with loneliness – fuelled partly by a rise in later life divorces, according to an official study. Figures show almost seven million members of the baby-boomer generation and above admit to feeling lonely.
Research published as part of David Cameron’s plan to measure the nation’s ‘happiness’ said almost half of people over 80 feel lonely - many “much of the time”.
Campaigns groups say the study, by the Office for National Statistics, suggests the generation approaching retirement will be a “loneliness time bomb”.
