I happened to chance upon a 1971 magazine that had an article on credit. At the time everyone in the country connected with credit expected to join in a big “credit boom”. This was called in those days “Living on the Tick”. Those unable to get credit because they were too poor had to look to alternative sources such as the pawnbroker, the easiest way at the time of obtaining a short term Loan.
The article tells of a lady, aged 30, and her struggle to find money to keep her family of five children and a husband who was in ill health. Borrowing on Wednesdays she redeemed the goods she pledged on Fridays. In the article the lady states that her husband’s suit will fetch £2.00 and his shoes 15 shillings. (75p).
When the articles are redeemed there was a charge of 5p in the pound per month. Pawn brokers are beginning to appear on our shopping streets again with gold and silver and electrical goods and also computer games being pledged. In this period of economic struggle let us hope that history does not repeat itself.

Prostate Cancer UK is urging the nation to dust off their vintage tea cups, grab their rolling pins, get baking and hold a 1940s themed Tea For Victory party in order to raise vital funds to help the 250,000 men in the UK living with prostate cancer.
One of Britain's most acclaimed designers and vintage supporters, Wayne Hemingway, has exclusively designed 40s-style materials, including bunting, table cloths and cake stands, available for people to use at their tea parties.
