“This is another set of contradictory figures that will bring little in the way of seasonal cheer to many older jobseekers. While we welcome an increase of 31,000 to 7.4 million in the number of people aged 50-64 in work, it is disheartening to see that long term unemployment continues to be a significant problem for the over-50s.

Older women outstrip men in employment rise
Older workers and jobseekers will be cheered by the latest labour market statistics, published today by the Office for National Statistics, showing that the overall number of people between 50 and 64 in employment rose by 56,000.
However, TAEN – The Age and Employment Network notes the growth in jobs is tilted in favour of older women by four to one.

Mature Times survey reveals professionals 'struggling' to afford retirement
Less than a third of professionals aged in their 50s can afford to retire when they planned, according to new research.
Nearly three quarters - 72 per cent - will have to continue working past their desired retirement age and 36 per cent of those have no idea when they will be able to stop work.
Just 28 per cent of those polled can afford to retire when they had planned.
Number of over 65s working at highest level but older people suffer longer unemployment
The number of over 65s in work has reached the highest level since comparable records began in 1992 according to the latest round of labour market statistics published by the Office for National Statistics.
Mature Times editor moving on
Tony Watts, founding editor of Mature Times, one of the UK’s largest circulation 50+ publications, has left to take up other projects.
Tony, now 58, originally helped establish the newspaper, which has a 200,000 national circulation, in 1991, and left after three years but continued to write for the paper.
In 2004, he helped form another company – Highwood House Publishing - to buy the business back and has since then helped build the title into the UK’s only campaigning newspaper for the ‘grey market’ with over half a million readers. And its website www.maturetimes.co.uk is now one of the largest dedicated sites in the country aimed at the 50. He also regularly commentates on 50+ issues on regional radio and television.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has launched a national recruitment campaign to fill 35,000 jobs across England and Wales. A spokesperson for the campaign told Mature Times that the 'people skills' and dedication of older people will be particularly welcomed.
