The National Pharmacy Association is encouraging people to follow the instructions on their medicines after researchers have found that taking slightly more paracetamol than is recommended can cause significant damage over time.
The research, conducted by the University of Edinburgh and the Scottish Liver Transplantation Unit looked at data from 663 patients admitted to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh between 1992 and 2008 with paracetamol-induced liver injury. Staggered overdoses accounted for admissions of 161 patients.
Leyla Hannbeck, Head of Information Services at the National Pharmacy Association said:
“Paracetamol is a commonly used medicine but like others it can harm as well as heal if taken inappropriately. Before taking any medicine, people should carefully read the patient information leaflet and follow any instructions given to them by their GP or pharmacist. Adults can take 1-2 tablets of paracetamol 4-6 hourly, up to four times a day - so no more than 8 tablets should be taken in a 24 hour period. It is important that you do not exceed recommended dose. If you find that paracetamol is not controlling your symptoms, speak to your pharmacist – they may be able to provide you with alternative pain control or can refer you on to someone who can help if you are suffering with chronic pain.”
The NPA is also encouraging people to pay close attention to combination cold and flu products as we enter the peak seasons for these illnesses.
Leyla Hannbeck said:
“Many of the over-the-counter cough and cold remedies contain paracetamol as an ingredient so if you are already taking painkillers, make sure you tell your pharmacist. The best advice is if you’re unsure about the correct doses, check the medicine label or ask the pharmacy team for more information.”

Jeremy Hunt hands responsibility for out-of-hours care back to GPs
The GP contract is set to be rewritten as part of reforms to out-of-hours care which will see general practice handed back responsibility for the care of patients around the clock.
Speaking at a King’s Fund conference yesterday, Jeremy Hunt said that GPs will not ‘personally’ have to be on call at all times but that they should have ‘sign-off’ to say they are happy with their patients’ care out of hours.

Statins in new diabetes link
Certain statins may put older people at risk of developing diabetes, according to the findings of a new study.
Researchers in Canada looked at the medical records of more than 470,000 people aged 66 or over with no history of diabetes who were newly treated with a statin. They found compared with pravastatin, treatment with higher potency statins, especially atorvastatin and simvastatin, might be associated with an increased risk of diabetes.
