Commenting on labour market figures released today (Wednesday 14 December) by the Office for National Statistics, Chris Ball, Chief Executive of TAEN – The Age and Employment Network, says:
“This is another set of contradictory figures that will bring little in the way of seasonal cheer to many older jobseekers. While we welcome an increase of 31,000 to 7.4 million in the number of people aged 50-64 in work, it is disheartening to see that long term unemployment continues to be a significant problem for the over-50s.

Mature Times editor moving on
Tony Watts, founding editor of Mature Times, one of the UK’s largest circulation 50+ publications, has left to take up other projects.
Tony, now 58, originally helped establish the newspaper, which has a 200,000 national circulation, in 1991, and left after three years but continued to write for the paper.
In 2004, he helped form another company – Highwood House Publishing - to buy the business back and has since then helped build the title into the UK’s only campaigning newspaper for the ‘grey market’ with over half a million readers. And its website www.maturetimes.co.uk is now one of the largest dedicated sites in the country aimed at the 50. He also regularly commentates on 50+ issues on regional radio and television.
